I had vaguely remembered the Saiyuki OVA from Journey to the Rest website. If I remember correctly, the OVA was the trial run before Gensomaden Saiyuki began. The choose your own adventure was only 10.00 dollars through one of my obscure websites. I know I have it written down somewhere, 'cause I almost bought it.
Somtimes I would love to see what would happen if the card didn't work. What kind of work would each of them do? I know it's kind of a given for some of them, but suppose those jobs weren't available, what would they do then? Would they willingly turn their income over to Gojyo to gamble with, even if he usually wins? Could they hope to earn enough to feed Goku?

There has been quite many fanfics where they for some reason can't use their card. They often turn out to work at childrens day care center for some reason. It would be nice to see what would happen in canon, though.

In canon, Gojyo works as a waiter (getting chewed out by the boss for flirting with the female customers, but BOY does he look gorgous!!!), Goku does dishes (white frill apron), Sanzo (pinkish-violet frill apron) sits on his lazy butt doing nothing but smoke... Hakkai I don't know what he did, because he was the one who took the credit card, and ehen the cat stole the credit card from him (don't ask me how that happened) it was the end of the episode and everyone went ballistic. There's also one Omake at the end of Reload Manga 3, where the Sanzo-gang celebrates their "first year on the road" with a big feast (hilarious!), and then it turns out that Sanzo lost the card, while Hakkai jokes about "skipping town". Meanwhile, Kou's gang looks at the card that Yaone found a couple of days ago after one of their fights with Sanzo&Co. She forgot to return it, and now all wonder what that plastic card is about anyway. They decide to throw it away... But if they were really left on their own devices, I think they would be much more careful with their funds. But they should be able to survive pretty well.

The scene you described when they were working in a restaurant, is that in the manga? To me, the manga is canon, the anime is not, even if I do like many eps of the anime. Unless of course, the anime makes a real pair of Gojyo/Hakkai, and the manga doesn't. Then I reconsider and think of the anime as canon. (Minekura Kazuya? Who's that? ) Of course, they would be able to take care of themselves. They are grown up men after all. ;D But the journey would take them even more time than now. Having to stop for work in every town. Nah, actually, I think I would fall back on Gojyo's gambling. And Hakkai's, if they could get him to gamble for their living.

There restaurant scene is anime-canon. Sorry, should've added that. Though, somehow I think that this particular episode might find its way into the manga sooner or later. I have the manga as canon, too. bt I don't mind adding in the one or other fun scene from the anime (Meow.). Grown-up men? Sanzo & gang? The only "grown up" in the group is Hakkai. And Goku, occasionally. But most of the time, they're just overgrown brats. They could have Sanzo recite sutras and collect money from the passer-bys. And of course they could pull of the charity stunt that their imposters did in every town... I mean, Sanzo is, after all, a monk, so it would be his job to preach...

Much more fun to imagine what if on this question.
Can't see Sanzo doing his "job", reciting Sutras. I suppose at some point in his life he hasn't been able to avoid it, but it seems to be his last choice of things to do.
Hakkai as a grown-up is a given. He is the enabling Mother who does't let her children grow up. He does almost everything for the other three. Says something when you think Goku is more mature than the other two. We know who the least mature one is...
Please do not mention their imposters. Two of the worst episodes ever done. ( I know this is elsewhere, too, but I hadn't put in my two cents yet.) Almost didn't watch the second one, but how could I skip an episode? Wish I had.
Still love that restaurant scene. Espescially the frilly pink apron on Sanzo. Even then he did no work.

Well, Goku still acts childish when he quarrels with Gojyo, but I guess it beats total boredom. And he does get his act together much better than certain monks, for example. Or certain kappas, who just can't stop teasing certain monks. As for the imposters... the episode had some great scenes... Like, when the gang laughed about the imposters. Seeing Sanzo actually surrendering to a giggle fit was fun. And have the imposters do stuff and get it blamed on Sanzo's gang... And Kou showing up at the end... LOL! And it made me wonder... how many imposter groups are there? It says in the manga that they encountered a couple of cosplayers (probably referring to those guys?) IMO, the 'regular crew' scenes were good, just the focussing on the imposters all the time was too much. And in the end, the tiger couldn't change its stripes.

I did like how Kou showed up at the end and did what I had only wished I could do to them. Thinking about the first one, I guess there might have been a few redeeming scenes. Them being put in jail was amusing, and I do remember feeling a little sorry for the Imposters, how badly they got beat up, but I still liked Kou doing it in the end. I have only watched that episode twice, once on Anime Network and once whem I got the DVD, so I don't remember much, just the overall feeling of, yuck.
With the second one, I remember thinking how OOC Sanzo and the other's seemed when ordering the food. They may have been in a hurry, but they were rude and pushy. I remember, too, that one had buried his costume (which one was that?). That had seemed sweet.
Bickering with siblings childish? Never. Shoot, I still argue with my sister and we're a lot older than those two.
I'll have to watch it again for the giggle fit of Sanzo's. Maybe I can fastforward over some of the other areas.

Well... the episodes are certainly not on any of my "top" list. And I'd so love to see more of Kou & gang. In a very funny way, they are the mirror of Sanzo's gang. It always amuses me how Kou is obsesssed with his mom, and Sanzo with 'dad' Koumyo. Makes me wonder what would have happened if Doku had picked up a 13-year old Sanzo and raised him...

Now it's my turn to have really bad download speeds. It's saying 12 hours. Too Long. I've seen these raw, but I can hardly wait for the subtitles to see how close my guesses were to what actually happened.

The one says 2 days, the other 3 hours... oh my.
BTW, what happened to the Saiyuki OVA you ordered? Did that turn out to be the real thing?

Still waiting for it to come. I'm getting impatient (ME! no way) I'll have to go back and find out what day it was ordered and see if there was a shipping date under the online order. The other possibility is it came to our PO box, and I haven't been there in a week. Boy is the Post Office going to be mad about that. I probably have a bin of junk mail alone. I just don't get there often because when I get out of work, they're closed. I'll check today when I go grocery shopping and let you know. I'm dying to find out. I stopped the download of 19 to see if it would speed up the other download. It worked some, I'm down to 61/2 hours. Let's see, should be done by the time I get home from shopping. Then I'll start 19 back up. Everyone in this house knows nothing is downloaded while my Saiyuki is downloading. No one dares turn off Azureus. NO ONE gets in the way of me and my Saiyuki (as I start breathing fire. That's why I like dragons. When I'm angry I'm just like them. I don't get angry often, but when I do...beware my temper.) ;D ;D ;D
