So what fandom got you into fan fiction? I fully admit I started off reading non-Boy's Love Rurouni Kenshin and Ranma 1/2. Then, Madam Hydra, who is an evil evil lady btw ;D, started writing GW fan fiction, which lead to my discovery of GW fan fiction. The authors from there gatewayed me into the million and one fandoms I read in today. Ironically, there is only one RK fic I'm following right now.

I'd have to say, I got into fanfiction quite by chance. I used to love DBZ, and downloaded episodes off the computer, when I came upon a DBZ fan site. I had no idea what it was, so, when I started a reading, I thought "This isn't how the story line goes". As I continued reading, I finally figured that it was something called "fanfiction". At that time, I had no idea what it meant, and I wanted to write one of my own, granted none of it came out any good. I think I was twelve or thirteen when I started writing fanfiction, though, that was only about six or seven years ago. For the longest time I only wrote DBZ fics, now I don't write any. Truthfully, I never really was into shonen-ai until about a year ago when I started watching Saiyuki.
Interesting thread, by the way.

Depends on what you mean. I 'wrote' fanfiction inside my head when I was very young. Early ones were often based on 'Alias Smith & Jones'. But then I had no idea what I was doing and couldn't find anyone else that did this. It was manga/anime that let me found there were others like me. First I didn't know there was such a thing as fan fiction, I only read the originals. I started with Inu-Yasha, then Fushigi Yuugi. FY was the first romantic story I had ever liked in my life. I think the next manga I read was Ranma ½.<br> My daughter then introduced me to GetBackers and that was what really hooked me. Ban and Ginji are my first true love in anime. It was then I found the ff.net, or rather my daughter introduced me to that, too. She had written a few stories and I wanted to read them. Then she recommended other stories and I started to read, and read, and read... This was only about a year ago. Finally I wrote my first fanfiction. Of course it was a GetBackers. First I was reluctant to post it, but I could see that even if my story wasn't any masterpiece, there were still many stories that were not better than mine, or worse. That's how it all get started. Besides from the above mentioned, I now read/watch Saiyuki, Ceres, Video Girl Ai, FAKE, One Piece, Gravitation, .Hack/Sign, Trigun, Naruto, Eerie queerie... you got the point. Too many good manga/anime out there. When it comes to fanfiction, I only read Saiyuki at the moment and a few One Piece.

I was bored at work. LoL.
Seriously, though, I have always daydreamed about characters and thinking up possibly storylines and such, since I was just a little kid.
But it wasn't until after "The Fellowship of the Ring" movie came out that I discovered that other people did the same thing, wrote them down and actually let other people read them... and it wasn't until after I'd read a few Lord of the Rings fics that I sat down and wrote my first fanfic one-shot. (I'd written some original stuff before, but it was actually posting fanfic that gave me the courage to post some of my original work.)
Now, I'm writing Inuyasha, LotR, some PotC, and I even wrote a couple X-men things.
I was so psyched to find other people. My "real life" friends and family think fanfic and fraternizing with other fanfic authors is a waste of time; I enjoy it, though.
cheers,Kellen

Well I'm alot like Me-Nuriko... I used to "write" them in my head when I was small.
Then when I went on vacation to Japan I just was suddenly inspired to write a fanfic for YYH. I was surfing the net for some information and came across fanfiction, and then I realized I wasn't the only one. Heh.
That's why I love the internet. You realize you aren't alone! ;D

Inuyasha, it is all that cute dogie's fault. I mean there I was a regular fan type when I came across this cute, fluffy, white haired, half breed dog demon. Who cartoon network was censoring and I couldn't get any of the later episodes of. What was a person to do. I knew the internet, where I found not only a great community of other fans like me. But this wondrous or sometimes hideous thing called fan fiction. I will never forget trying to decipher some of the different story markers. I think there ought to be a glossary at the top of every section with the words and signs used in that section. Cause as we all know they are not the same. So I now know word I wouldn't have dreamed of and have waded through mountains of bad, worse and Did they even reread this. To be putting out the stuff myself! Long live the DOG!

I was surfing around the internet for Sailor Moon websites, and found www.sailormercury.com. It is an AMAZING site for fan fiction, although I didn't realize that at the time. I was like... "o.o New Sailor Moon stories?! *goes off to read*" The first story I read there was "Moon Guardians," and it drew me in like nothing else. After that I started to read other stories, including many Sailor Moon/DBZ crossovers. ^^;;;;; I also read a really good Sailor Moon/Ranma 1/2 crossover, which I've unfortunatly lost the link to. ;_; These stories really got me into it, especially crossovers. *-* I've read fan fiction for MANY more series than I've written for, and I'm not sure if I could remember them all. All I know is that one day someone pointed me to ff.net, and after that I was gone. ^^;; -Iapetus

Outside of writing my own stuff at an early age... What seriously got me into fanfiction was a fanzine for a Star Trek story that I bought in 1989. That's when I fell in love with the idea of publishing my scribblings. I also wanted to read more stories written by fellow fans, because I admired their skills and creativity. On a 'bigger' scale, I started reading fanfiction when signing up for ffnet in 2001. So, it's pretty much just the ordinary story, I guess.

Wow. Now, I feel like the odd one out. While I always made up stories in my head, it was until very recently that any fan fiction ideas showed up in my head. Somehow it makes me feel a little strange. I guess I just have trouble think up ideas with other peoples characters. That isn't to say I didn't often wish there was more story about the characters; after all, I got into fan fiction for the stories.

Well, I didn't make only fanfictions in my head when I was small. I made a lot of original stories, too. Often based on dreams I had at night. Sometimes (not very often) from what I had played with my friends, in which case they were part of my stories. Sometimes I was inspired by something I had seen on the TV or read, but made something new of it.
I have to admit all my stories were self-insertions. That was my way to keep my life a little more interesting. And back then, I didn't even realize there were more boys than girls that were the main characters and had all the adventures in what I read and watched. In my original stories I was the heroine and my friends and partners in my adventures were both boys and girls.

My fanfictions used to all be self-insertions too, and based off of my dreams. *g*

When I was really little I used to imagine in my head that the cartoon characters I watched were my best friends and I shared new adventures with them. As I got older I was wisked away through new galaxies and had my first crushes on characters from my favorite shows.
I actually used to write fanfiction stories when I was in High School, but with nowhere to share them, I'm afraid I stopped before I knew it. My best type of "writing" was the ones I shared with 2 of my friends. We all had different characters we liked from tv shows and we used to write notes back and forth during class, in character, expanding them beyond recognition. It was so much fun getting a letter from Hawkeye or Steve McGarret, only to answer as Trapper John or Danno. THANK GOD the teachers never caught us and no one ever got hold of one of them. Counceling in the Guidance office would have followed. Sometimes when you've had friends to share your fantasies with like that, it makes you miss it all the more. I hadn't realized how "grown up" I had become until I discovered video games, and then Anime.
The first anime I fell in love with was Sorcerer Hunters. I went online to find out any info I could about it. When I watched the last episode, I was so sad. Then I looked up Saiyuki, I had watched only 2 episodes, but it had caught my interest. There were 50 pages of websites and I started down the list. Found one that had Fanfiction, and was hooked. Finally one of the authors told that she also posted on fanfiction and I tried it. The rest , as they say, is History.

You're lucky, cesmith... I have no friends that share my interests. I managed to drag one into fanfiction, but she dislikes anime (and thinks they're stupid) and ended up reading only harry potter fanfiction... She got into fanfiction just cuz she saw me on ff.net all the time 'til one day she was curious enough to explore it herself. But still...
how can she not see the joy of anime?!

Kitsune-oni
We love Anime, so we see the joy. Unfortuantly not everyone does. The amount of people who do has grown since I first started to watch it 9 years ago, when there was very little available, to now, when there are whole sections in video stores and Cable Networks that offer only Anime.
About your friend. You got her into fanfiction, that's more than some of us can do. Once her foots in, there are possibilities. Does she read your stories? She may just not have seen the right show yet. My future daughter-in-law has an Anime night with her girlfriends once a month. They line up all different types and watch at least one episode of each. Not all of them like Anime, but they have fun together and have found some great shows.
My friends who shared my interests when I was in High School (30years ago) have grown up and are too adult for cartoons now, so I'm in the same boat so many of us are in. That's why the message board is so nice. I don't feel so weird as an adult, because I'm able to share my love of anime with others. (But I really do miss those letters)
