Does the story need to be set in the present, or can it be set in the future? People don't need to blow up the oil fields in order to deplete the reserves, all they need to do is to continue to use it unwisely. It is a limited supply, and when so much of a countries economy is based on fossil fuels, they rarely will jepordize their economy to that extent.
Set your story in the future when the reserves are dwindling and it is too expensive for the average person to buy gasoline. (hmmm, not too far in the future I think) In your story, do you need to include facts? Do you need to include what types of power will replace fossil fuels? Do you need to discuss how humanity might go backwards in technology if they are unprepared for the changes? Do you need to include the names of heroes who are exploring these new types of power, and some very old ones such as wind and water? I know, lots of questions, but maybe they will help.

Thanks! Responding to your questions organized my thoughts a lot - very helpful! Brainstorming etc. If *bows* you think up anything else, it would be much appreciated. Did you want the responses?
And it has to be 700-1000 words!! So short!!
Dedicating the rest of my evening to this damned essay. Plus I have a geography one to write - it's optional, and against some other schools (it's a competition) but if you win, you get AU$300...(US$227) Enticing.

Glad the questions helped. Unless writing the answers down will help you write the essay, don't waste your time with them, though I am curious how it turns out. 700 to 1000 does seem short, but not everyone has the writing experience you do. When I was your age it would have been torture. That IS a nice prize for the geography essay. What did you need to include in that one? Good luck.

Should be doing homework. Too tempting. I have to do a self-portrait for art!!!! It's awful. *cringes* But it loks better than me. It's acne-free. Lucky little thing. Geog essay has to be on a natural disaster, so I chose the eruption of Krakatau in 1883. Ancient history, but I know some stuff about it already. I might not end up doing it - if I have time. =) Since I was moved up a maths class after getting common test results, I'm actually finding maths challenging again, I think mostly because I was moved up mid-topic, and we havdn't covered that bit yet. Joy.

Long time since I last updated. ^^
Have finally started getting somewhere on my science essay. I'm calling it "Glimpses" as the story is illustrated through short, rather drabbley passages. I quite like it, actually, but the word limit is a hassle and I have to prune it down as I go. I only have about another 300 words to work with, and I'm thinking that I am so dead it's not funny.
Other than that: lists for the new rooms at the BH came up today. I'm in a two-room with Li-Ling, which is good because this way a) we can both study more, and b) she won't be all (or as) bugged at her roomies because they were always fighting amongst themselves and with others... There is less space, but if Alison Harding could fit in all her stuff, I'm sure several of us could manage.
Have a trigonometry test next Tuesday. We've finished the topic and I still haven't got much of an idea of what's going on. ><

A good way to handle trig is SOHCAHTOA. Now, this is the way Mr. Lewis taught us, and I'm sure you'll never forget it once you know it.
Sun On Holiday Can Always Help To Overcome Anxiety.
Alternatively, one can say:
Sex On holiday Can Always Help To Overcome Anxiety.
We were taught both ways O.O Perhaps trigonometry should be banned as a traumatizing experience.

Hehehe. We were taught SOHCAHTOA but not with the...whatcha call them again? Acronyms, right? Or something....
Have too much english work. (Am sitting in english.) *blows raspberry at teacher*

Spoke to Mum last night and generally broke down again - though it was 9:45 and I should have been in bed (Damn BH). I suppose it's because it's nearly the end of term. We break up next Friday, and I fly back to Malaysia on the Saturday. *bounce*
I guess things just haven't being going right. I've not been sleeping well and I'm always very disorganised....I know I'm supposed to be the invincible student, staying up 'til three and going to class fine, living in utter chaos, but screw that, I wanna go home. *buries face*

Things are going better this week. (Phew.)
I handed in my science essay; it turned out ok, and I quite liked it, but I was still 12 words over the limit. (The word count I included at the end, however, somehow missed the last twenty words.) I will flesh it out again, I think, and put it up on fictionpress.com. ?
I fly home on Saturdya afternoon; currently Thursday evening. I can't wait!

I'm glad things are better this week. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be home, and no one is invincible. The combination of end of school year craziness and the anticipation of going home to family and friends would cause anyone to be unorganized and emotional.
Is there a problem for the essay being 12 words over? Let us know when you post it. I look forward to reading it on fictionpress when you do.

cesmith: Being in Australia, rather than America (You do live in America, right? Or did I misinterpret something somewhere along the line?), our seasons are different, and summer is at Christmas, so our school year begins in Jan/February and finishes in December, rather than the Septermber-July format. So it's only the end of semester, but it's certainly enough. I'll be posting the story when I get back to KL; I can't wait to see my computer again!! (At school, everything, including ff.net is blocked, so I make do with skimming through stuff at LJ and Echoes from the West.) I'll put a link here when it's up. I handed in the appendices today, as there was a problem with my USB. (It was supposed to be brief, but it ended up longer than the story itself, and rather weak. >.<; I'm leaving soon to my aunt's place, to catch the plane tomorrow. ^^ (B_D: Will see you soon, I'm sorry I didn't call you! Packing and moving rooms, and homework. I have quite a bit for over the hols....bleaugh)

Yes, I live in America. So how long do you have off between semesters?

Ah, yes. That lil thing on the side says Upstate New York. Why did I not see that? >< We have four terms, most schools have two weeks between each term but 6-7-8 weeks over Christmas. (We as a private school, however, get three weeks between terms three and four, in Septmber, which is good!)
Arrived in M'sia last night, but frankly am only having a half good time. Some things are not going well, but am managing to enjoy myself at times - it's just the in-betweens, you know?
I forgot to put my essay on my USB, so I don't think I have it on my computer here in M'sia. I have a hard copy, but I don't fancy typing it all up again when I can actually access fictionpress at school. I think my parents might have kept the email with it attached, though..... ?

MY PLANE TICKET BACK TO MELBOURNE HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Argh. Stupid Maxis, sacking their travel agents and leaving me stranded back ...home, with my parents...and laptop WITH INTERNET ....and not at the boarding house for several more days, perhaps..... ^^ Not as bad as I'd thought. But still. Rather stupid.
*grrr*
Of course, my dad is in Jakarta and therfore can do nothing. This is sucking very badly.
Edit: Immigration here decided that as my plane was leaving on Sunday, my visa should be cancelled on Sunday. Therefore I could not take my Monday flight - though I did tick "Visiting Friends/Relatives" rather than "Student" on the form when I entered Malaysia. I am now booked on a Sunday night flight, which flies via Singapore (!!!), and the travel agent (who has been bending over backwards to help) has a colleague who's auntie or something is on the same flight. I fly economy M'sia-Sing, and business class (!!!) Sing-Melbs, I think because that's the only place they could fit me in. I arrive on Monday morning which is a hassle because my auntie is picking me up, and she has to drop my cousins at school. >.<

Well, I actually arrived in Melbs. Thumbs up. A week ago, yeah. I'm a bit behind. ^^
I came ALL the way in business class, it was SO good. I got scallops and stuff - I was even offered wine....I declined. ^^ Shouldn't've. lol But I was kidnapped by hostesses and stuff because my stupid travel agent *ignores that him getting me on a flight was actually quite amazing* booked me in as an unacompanied minor. Phoo. I hardly even got to touch my passport - and I love travelling solo. And the travel agent's colleage's auntie's son knew someone from my school. Lol! What's that, the six degrees of connection or something, right? ^^ So funny.
Well, anyhow. School's been behaving reasonably well, for a first week back - though I've been really disorganized. More so that usual, I mean. I've been a little angsty at times - one night just sucked and I was having a nice sob, and writing weird-all depressing poetry, and then started running up and down corridors with Jess. Crazy. I think I got over that.
Had a GREAT argument/debate with Serene (fellow Saiyuki-fan) about how Saiyuki IS better than whatever anime she was affirmative for. ^^ Highly amusing - considering we were in the laundry. She weirded out at my interest in Nii. ^^ And my, like, drooling over almost all the male characters. She hates Kenren. But she's a Hakkai-fan - that almost redeems her. ^^
