Of course. Actually I'm finished. Just polishing, and betaing (is that a word?) left.

Well, I've beta-ed Therhoda's entry (at least what she has so far ) but have yet to begin on my own...I'm pondering two different fandoms at this point and haven't made up my mind. I was actually just thinking about it and do plurals count? I mean...if we use 'messages' instead of 'message' would that be a problem? Just wondering...

Ok now here is a question.
Do vignettes count? Is plot really necessary?
Can it be more of a look into a life thing.

To answer some questions: - the words can't be plural unless it's stated in the rules. - is a plot needed? Well, I'd say so. It's not a PWP-NC17 contest. - If your plot is "X wakes up, goes to work, eats, comes home again and goes fishing" then that's fine, too - just keep in mind that you have to catch the attention of readers outside of the fandom you are writing in.

I've got a small plot in my story, so it doesn't break any rules. But I still wondered about this 'a plot is needed'. It doesn't have to be PWP-NC-17, to not have a plot. I have read several small (both good and bad) fanfics that just covers one scene. There is no plot, only a meeting, someone brooding over something, or some other silly nothing. I say it's very possible to write a good fic without a plot, inside the rating system we can use here.

Well, maybe it would be worth to start a discussion about "What qualifies as a plot"...

Question.
The story can't be over 2000 words no matter what? Because, as I'm writing mine, it looks like it'll be a bit over 2000 words, even if I shorten it a bit.

Let me clear up the "plot" issue - The story should make some sense, have a start, a middle and and end, and some sort of useful theme. "Thoughts" usually do have a useful theme, as they develope a character from point A to point B, so they will pass as having a rudimentary plot if you can see the developement. I hope this helps. Asfor the length, sorry, but the story should be between 1000-2000 words. No more, no less. Title and author's name don't count, and neither do A/Ns. I know that that is difficult if you tend to get carried away while writing, but please remember that this is supposed to improve your skills as a writer. I'm certain that it's equally hard for authors who usually only write stories around 500 words.

All right, thanks. I just wanted to know before I made it too long.

Why do I suddenly feel like the black sheep in the challenge? *looks at the other entries and hides under her notebook*

Naw, you're not the black sheep. Your fic is wonderful, if I may say so. It's good to see something that is not Saiyuki for the contest. I wished that Karots had entered her "Good Omens" fic for the contest. A bit more diversity in fandoms would make it easier to compare things like usage of language, handling of characters, structuring of the story, etc. - and that way, help to learn a bit about how to improve one's own writing, rather than being stuck in drooling over a certain character.

JeiC, I agree with OptiMoose. Your FanFiction was quite good and it is nice to see another Anime represented. I really enjoyed reading it the first time for the enjoyment and the second time with the excuse of making sure all the elements were included.
OptiMoose- I'm torn about Karots entry too. I love her pre-series Hakkai and Gojyo friendship, but Ears was something really special. So different and creative.

*sneezes* whoa, y'all are talking about me! As time passes, I realize I do like "Ears" more than "42 Days" but I'm happy with my choice because, while my entry is hard to continue, there were a billion places I could have gone with "Ears" - I really enjoyed doing a second chapter, and that wouldn't have suited it as a contest entry. Although I do agree with Opti - fangirlism definitely adulterates peoples' perspectives on how they might rate a fic. (Although Crowley makes me go more squiggly inside than Gojyo does, but that's just personal preference ;D ) Hey, challenge #1 is just a crash course. There's always a next time. Oh, and just because I have to say this too - JeiC, I don't even *follow* that fandom and I liked your fic. You've got no right to be so self-deprecating when you write that well.
