What does everyone do in their free time, besides writing? I’m quite curious to know what everyone’s hobbies are. I hope I’m not sounding too weird thought.

Before I started to study at the University (1999) I had two big hobbies which I had to stop because of lack of time and money. These were riding and karate.
I have taken lessons in horse riding both as a kid and as an adult, and I've also helped other people with their horses in private. One of the horses I helped to exercise was Swedish Champion in one of the fields of Western Riding. The other horses have been European style.
Karate, I trained first a style called Yui Shin Kai, but due to politics and a lot of trouble in the club we split up and the part I continued was a Korean style (but still karate, not Tae Kwon Do). It was called Tang Soo Do. Before you ask, I don't have a black belt. (I've got Blue in Yui SHin Kai, and Brown in Tang Soo Do, if that says you anything.) I also got the first licence to teach in Karate.
I haven't done either of this since I started my studying, but now when I'm finished (yay, I've got a Master's degree in Computer Science!) maybe I start again. But my body is in such bad shape right now, so it would really take an effort to start again. (Or I'm just lazy?)

Free time? What's that?
Anyway, school is taking up so much of my time that I had to stop taking guitar lessons recently. I gave up rollerskating and archery and a lot of other things a long time ago. Work is killing me so I generally just come home and sleep. Yep, haven't given up sleep yet, but I have given up eating most of the time - means I can get more homework done. As for why I'm here right now...I can take a celebratory break when I finish a large assignment.

Me-Nuriko: How old were you when you started karate? I’ve always wanted to do in since I was seven, but there were money issues. I want to start taking lessons now but, I’m eighteen, do you think that’s too old? I have no idea what type of karate I want to take, nor do I know what the difference is. I feel so ignorant . JeiC: Yea, I don’t have that much free time with school and all, either. Between school and babysitting my two little sisters, I have close to no free time to speek of. Thought, what I do in any free time I have, besides reading and writing, would have to be attempting to draw (not very good at it thought). Something else I like to do would be walking, thought it’s really not much a hobby. ;}

You're not too old. I was 31 when I started, and there was a woman who had started when she was 43. And you're never too old to do anything, unless there are actual physical limits because of age. But even that you can make happen later in life by keeping in good shape. I have heard of a 65 year old woman who also started to train karate, and she made it to the black belt. I also know about girls sitting in wheel chairs training karate. of course there are some things you can't do when you're limited like that, but that shan't keep you from doing what you can do, right?
As long as the club you enter is a serious one, it doesn't matter what style you choose. The mental training is the same, and even if the physical exercises are different in different styles, it doesn't really means very much. If you don't like pain, I would suggest you to not choose a full contact karate style, though.
You can always change style later, if you happen to choose one that doesn't suit you.

Thanks, that helped. I've been wanting to join karate, but I thought I was too old. I mean, some people start berfore they're even ten.
There's a karate place right down the road form me, I think I might try it out.

There's a karate place right down the road form me, I think I might try it out. ;} Do that. Karate gives you physical training, mental training, knowledge in self-defence and good friends. You will get stronger, nimbler, lither and get better self-confidence. Good luck.

My brother does karate.
I promise I'll answer this question just not today... I'm so brain dead can barely think straight.

Hobbies outside of writing... Given that I actually have the time to do something, and outside of spending time with friends & family. Let's see... travelling (I love to 'see, touch, feel' the world), I like visiting exibitions (i.e. Archelogical ones), sometimes sing in a choir, go into a library or bookstore and just check out the one or other thing, try out new restaurants (usually with my friends)... I also like watching TV/go to the movies. Sports, I sometimes do swimming, and I used to do fencing, but had to give up fencing because my wrist couldn't stand the stress. So, nowadays I'm a lazy, fat bum.

I like to draw. I use to play the clarinet got really rusty since college didn't have the time. Mayhaps I should take it back up again. I also use to hike, camp and canoe all over the place but again time and health stopped me from doing that.
Recently I've gotten back into drawing, writing, reading and playing video games again. All very sedentary things I'm afraid. I have taken up DDR and am looking into taking Yoga classes. I want to get myself into shape so I can start hiking, biking, camping and boating again.
My brother has been trying to get me into karate for ages. He's worried at how slow it is taking me to get back in shape.

I like to draw though the results are depressing. I enjoy working with my hands, creating random objects out of bits and pieces I find around the house. For example: My earing stand: www.deviantart.com/deviation/8519759/A Random Decoration: www.deviantart.com/deviation/7667211/I also enjoy digital art and photography. Other than art, I love animals and horseback riding (yay, Me-Nuriko!). I'm not a great rider but I enjoy it tons. Unfortunately I have had to drop it because all nearby stables require you to own a horse, and the only stable that doesn't had a really unpleasant environment and I felt uncomfortable. Last time I went riding was last year at my godmother's castle in Lonrai, France. Awesome place; she's got a stud farm and there were so many fillys and colts! Cute! I enjoy baking and cooking (the more of the former). I've been told I make pretty good cupcakes and huge chocolate cookies (http://www.livejournal.com/users/fadetopain/7765.html)! School takes up a lot of time for me too, especially with IB exams this year and all. It cuts down on my hobby time. Enough rambling. ^^ Sorry to be a bore.

Hmm.. I love to cook and bake as well. I never really thought of them as a hobby though. I suspect they are.

Me neither, I never thought that baking and cooking as a hobby. I also like playing video games. As for horse back riding, I’ve tried it a few times, but horses never seem to like me. Maybe because they know that I don’t like them. My grandfather always used to get hurt by them when I was younger. Perhaps an unconscious part of me doesn’t like them because of it?

There is life outside of writing? /joke XD Uhm. As I am jobless at the moment, you could say I have more hobbies than I really need. I mostly enjoy listening to music, reading, and looking like a tool on my DDR mat. I also have a passion for languages. French and Japanese, in particular, but any and all are fair game. Even Klingon. But the Borg are not pleased about that at all. The last time they tried to assimilate me, I screamed "Kleefah" at them over and over until they became so annoyed that they were forced to retreat. Mwahahahaha. Oh, Lord, is it fun being a geek.

Me? I don't have a huge amount of free time anymore... I used to LOVE doing Tai Kwon Do and went at least three times a week but I fell out of that due to distance (I use public transport) combined with the fact that I got very depressed for a while and outside of work I didn't leave the house much... pity... I really should try and get back into it since I did really enjoy it so much I have since moved out of home, *sniggers* yeah it took till about a month before I turned 27 to move but I could no longer stand to live where I was. Things were good until step mother and her four, then five kids came along, then I go to the point where I was afraid to even leave my room in case I came into contact with them so you can imagine, I became even closer to my dvd and tv set etc... Then I moved in with some friends and now my comp is my life and I started going to FFNet all the time too Because of watching anime such as Prince of Tennis, I quite like playing tennis but I don't have the time... since moving I am now gone anbout 12 hours in the day because of travel to work and back, I really should have asked for that transfer... I listen to a heck of a lot of J-Pop, especially when wrting because 1) its great music and 2) since I don't know the words in most cases I can't be as easily distracted by singing the words If I'm not listening to j-pop then I listen to the radio. I usually play badminton on wednesday nights and often go to JAFWA on saturday nights. JAFWA being an anime club in Perth (cap city of Western Australia) and on many friday nights I go bowling with friends
