I found this list on an adult site, and after some heavy censour-ship I think this can be of help.
M = Male F = Female O = Other OC = Original Character OFC = Orig. Female Character
Combinations to make pairings:
M/F = male/female M/M = male/male F/F = female/female
Lime -- some smut but no actual penetration or hardcore description. Lemon -- Full out description of sexual acts Yaoi -- m/m sex (basically hardcore) Shonen-Ai -- M/M love stories (basically Soft core) Yuri -- f/f sex descriptions Sho(u)jo-Ai -- F/F love stories Xover - Crossover NC -- Non-Consentual AU -- Alternate Universe Cont -- Continuation SI -- Self-Insertion WAFF -- Warm and Fuzzy Feeling
*****
CS = Crime Scene Gen = Heterosexual M/F pairings. Sen also "Het". H/C = Hurt/Comfort Het = Heterosexual M/F pairings. Sen also "Gen". MC = Mind Control M-Preg = Male Pregnancy. N/C = Non-Consensual (forced sex/rape) OC = Original Character OFC = Original Female Character Preg = Pregnancy (can be non-con) PWP = Porn without Plot/Point note: originally meant Plot? What Plot? RPS = Real Person Slash (Actor Fics) Ship = A strong, ongoing relationship shared by two characters. Shipper = Fan(atic) extremely dedicated to a particular ship. Slash = Male/Male fiction. It is believed the "/" gave Slash it's name. Tort = Torture WIP = Work In Progress

Wow! Thanks, Me-Nuriko! Gen is also the abbrevation for a story without pairings, btw. and you missed "smarm".

There are a few others you missed, but since those all tend to dip into the NC-17 level of ratings. I suppose they can be passed on.

Yeah, I missed that Gen also is without pairings, and the 'smarm'.
Smarm = very deep friendship or non-sexual love between the characters
About the others that are not in the list, I purposly left them out, because, as Salmastryon said, they are in the NC-17 level.

Dear kk, maybe you check out the other threads in this section. There's one entirely dedicated to Mary Sue. As for AU... for fanfiction writers, AU means "Alternate Universe" - even though 'already used' certainly fits many plots

What are plotless stories referred to as now then?
And as for AU, with at least a half a million stories on ff.net, already used probably fits everyone's stories!! I'm probably guilty of it somewhere.

There is a thread in Fanfic Helpdesk 1 about plotless stories. 'PWP or What Qualifies a plot'.
As for AU. To me a story is AU if the characters are put in a different surrounding. Like, if you put the Sanzo-ikkou in a spaceship, or in a high school, or something like that. A story can also be AU if the surroundings are the same, but the characters have different background stories than they have in the original story. OptiMoose's 'Slaves of Fate' is a good example.

Here's another question of fanfic terms from a new fan-author:
What is a "vignette"?

I think it means the same as 'One-shot'. Somebody correct/verify this?

Yup I reckon so. As far as I've found, vignettes are only one-offs but maybe there's so other thingy behind it? Earlier you mentioned smut....please excusemy ignorance when I say: "What the..."

According to dictionary.com a vignette is: 1. a short, usually descriptive, literary sketch or 2. a short scene or incident, as from a movie. Short seems to be a key factor.
Again, according to dictionary.com, smut is obscenity in speech or writing, or pornography.

I thought pornography was obscene. It certainly isn't art.

Therein one walks a very fine line between the tasteful and the distasteful. And yeah, I've come across one-shots that are quite long (and have done a few that top five thousand words myself) ... and thus (sort of like rectangles and squares) a vignette is a one-shot, but a one-shot is not always a vignette. I always took the word to mean 'cranial discharge' myself.

Cranial discharge...heh heh.... I always thought they meant the same thing. And I sure as hell have read some very long one-offs.
