Speaking as someone who frequently writes vignettes...
One distinguishing factor of a vignette is that it doesn't necessarily have a plot. They're generally used to focus on one aspect of scene or character, but don't stand well on their own* because they provide very little in the way of context or action.
*outside of someplace like fanfiction where the use of well known characters and expected themes instantly provides context.

Yeah! Exactly. Yay for the articulate people on this board, else we'd never get anything said

So.. just for definition, a nice way of saying almost PWP? Not the porn way, the 'Plot? What plot?' one?

Not...really. I expect to see something very different when reading something labelled 'PWP' than I expect to see in something labeled a 'vignette'.
You're talking about accepted conventions, and the vignette is going to be more introspective or focused on a single aspect of something while a PWP will probably have more action or encompass a broader range of movement or characters.
At least, that's what I expect.

I agree on that one. Even the phrase 'Plot? What plot?' implies a more superficial take on the fiction - aka action-oriented as opposed to introspective/scenic-route type stuff. That doesn't mean that the fiction doesn't have a point - often times that action will be startlingly profound without spelling the meaning out with too much character thought.

Unless you're me, in which case it's all description and thought. ;-)
But then I never claimed to be any good at this. ;-)

Here's another thought on the vignette discussion. Another definition of vignette is "an ornament to decorate a chapter head or chapter end of a book, a flourish around a capital letter in a manuscript or a title page..."
Therefore I've always used the vignette designation for a one-shot story that 'embellishes' a particular plot point or character. It could be a simple piece that highlights an aspect of a charcter (i.e. why does Gojyo smoke?), or something that reveals an unexplored consequence of a particular plot device (i.e. what changed between Heero and Duo when he hesitated to open his parachute?).
Perhaps I'm unique in this interpretation, but it's usually worked well for me.

No, I've seen that definition and I'd agree with that assessment.

I always use it as laughing-so-hard-my-eyes-close ... Kinda like ;D in text format. XD Along the same vein, X3 confused my friend for a while, but it's kinda like the scrunch-eyed kitty face. Meyow.

Okay I have a question. I've seen a few people use this and I don't know what it means. "LMAO" I can't figure it out.

About vignettes...
Would they also be classified as a "drabble" (or vice versa), or do they have their differences?
