This is a contest over one of my plotbunnies. The idea came to me after reading about the fate of Sanzang's parents in the original 'Journey to the West', and I thought... -What if the father of Gojyo was one of the bandits who killed Sanzo's father on the ferry, when the couple went from the Imperial city to the west? -What if Sanzo's mother slept with Gojyo's father to save Sanzo's life (or whatever)? -What if out of that night, Gojyo was 'produced'? -And what if either Gojyo or Sanzo found out about this? Is anyone or anytwo brave enough to write this? My only 'limitation' for participation in the contest would be that the story can't be boy's love, shonen-ai or yaoi. Of course, if you want to write the story with boy's love, you can do that, too, but it won't be considerated for the contest. There's a prize involved in this: an original US release Gensoumaden Saiyuki DVD, "Sting of the Scorpion". i8.ebayimg.com/01/i/01/f5/71/b6_1.JPGIn case there should be more than one entry, I also have very lovely character pins that I could give out for those who didn't get the DVD: i16.ebayimg.com/01/i/02/f2/20/f3_1_b.JPG (No Gojyo, unfortunately ) In case you have any questions, or would like to participate, please let me know. Edit: There's one 'minor' problem in this story, and that is the fact that Sanzo is barely one year older than Gojyo. Sanzo's birthday is the 29th of November, Gojyo's the 9th of November. Since Sanzo can remember how Koumyou Sanzo fished him out of the water, he must've been at least one year old at the time when he was thrown into the river. Of course, this problem can be easily solved if you say that whatever caused Gojyo's father to leave Gojyo with his family (and disappear after that) and lead to Sanzo being afloat in the river happened a couple of months after Gojyo's birth...

No word limit? Yesss....
But we ask: do we need them to actually believe it?
And I'm assuming by 'anytwo' you mean we can collaborate?

Do they believe it? Well, I guess that's one of the questions to be answer by you. Can you co-operate? Sure, but if you win, that won't mean you'll get two DVDs

I'm starting to feel very ignorant here. To even be able to considering writing anything like this, I need enlightment in a lot of things.
Why was Sanzo's parents going from the Imperial city to the west?
What was their names and professions? What was baby Sanzo's name?
What happened under the attack? Where can I read about/watch it?
Were the bandits killing Sanzo's parents then youkai? The minus wave hadn't started so that must mean they were ordinary bandits?
I always thought that Gojyo was sent to his stepmother by his father, after his real mother had died. But, wasn't Gojyo's father dead, too? Who died first, when, how? If Gojyo's father was dead, too, who sent Gojyo to his stepmother? If he was alive, why didn't he live with them?
Gojyo's father's/stemother's names?
Please, tell me what's in canon, and where it's up to the author.

Canon: Sanzo was fished out of the river by Koumyou Sanzo. He remembers that. Nothing is known about the parents. Goyo was dropped off by his father at his wife&their son Jien. It's not known what happened to the parents.
As I said, the idea for this contest came from reading "Journey to the West" - that is the Chinese legend Saiyuki is based upon.
What happens in "Journey to the West" is: Sanzang's father is a civil officer in service of the emperor. He marries the daughter of a minister. She gets pregnant. The couple is sent to a town, since the Sanzang's father is going to be govenour of the town. On the way to said town, a ferryman falls for Sanzang's mother. He tosses Sanzang's father overboard (who is rescued by Kanzeon), and forces Sanzang's mother to live with him. Sanzang's mother (who learns that her husband is with Kanzeon) gives birth to Sanzang, but the ferryman wants to kill the baby. Sanzang's mother writes a letter inblood telling about the story, and she bites of the left pinky toe of the baby to be able to identify it. Then she places letter and baby on a wooden plank and puts it on the river, where it floats down to a monastery, where the abbot raises the kid. At the aage of 17, SAnzang learns about his true parents and goes out to avenge them. He is reunited with his mother&father, and the evil ferryman gets his just punishment. (There's a lot about river dragons and other ghosts, youkai and in-laws in that chapter of the story...)
Basically, the entire story is up to the author. I only gave the 'corner stones' of what I think is useful in the Saiyuki setting...
Sanzang's parents were sent because the father was going to be a govenor in a city. (Nothing is known about our Sanzo's parents!!!)
Sanzang's mother was a housewife and father was an imperial civil officer. The father's name was Chen Guangrui, the mother's name was Yin Wenqiao. Sanzang's baby name was not given.
Again, nothing is known about 'our' Sanzo'.
In the 'Journey to the West' novel, or in most filmed versions thereoff... It's in chapter 9 of the novel.
In the novel, it says "Evil thoughts surged up in him (AN: Liu Hong), and he conspired with Li Biao (AN: the other ferryman) to punt the boat to a misty and deserted place and wait till the middle of the night, when they killed first the servant and then Chen Guangrui. They pushed both corpses into the river and went away. When the young lady saw her husband killed she tried to fling herself into the water, but Liu Hong put his arms round her and said, "If you come with me, you'll be all right; but if you don't, I'll cut you in half." Unable to think of any other way out, the young lady had to agree to stay with Liu Hong for the time being at least. The murderer took the boat across to the southern bank and gave it to Li Biao. Then he dressed up in Chen Guangrui's clothes and, armed with the dead man's credentials, went with the young lady to take up his post in Jiangzhou."
Again, the original story from 'Journey to the West' has nothing to do with Saiyuki. If you want to make the story work, it would have to be youkai, though... and ordinary bandits.
Nothing is known about the fate of Gojyo's father. But if he really was a bandit, it could be possible that he was on the run, and dropped off the child with his real wife, you know...
I have no idea about Gojyo's father, but Gojyo's stepmother was named 'Ofukuro'... at least, that's what the translation in the "Ten years ago" section of my Gensoumaden Manga no 6 claims...
I hope, this helps. Sorry for causing so much confusion...

Thanks. I just hadn't realized that your 'corner stones' were from 'Journey to the west', even if I saw that the plot bunny came from there. Just one more question: is it known how old Gojyo was when he was dropped at his stepmother's? As for the confusion, I have to blame it on you, but not particulary for this plot. ;D You have made me start thinking much more about backgrounds and such, than I did before. And for that I'm very grateful. So no need to apologize.

As far as I know, nothing's known about Gojyo's age. Mmm... Backgrounds, I absolutely love them. That must be why I'm such a sucker for canon. A character can only functions "in character" if you take into account their eintire background, since that's what makes us act, react and think the way we do. So I usually spend a lot of time investigating and researching a character before I start writing...

I think, in July or something like that. Since there's no limit to the length, it depends on wether or not there are any longer fics planned by anyone...

This isn't so much a submission as a case of treneka had fun with your idea and the dark and twisted paths it led her down. Anywho, thanks for sharing your bunny - hope you like the fangs it grew. Oh and as for the end, I hope platonic love is acceptable. Crossing the River: www.fanfiction.net/s/2226965/1/

Wow! You might want to work on the grammar/language part, but otherwise... wow. I'd be curious to see what Gojyo will do with his newly earner knowledge. As for the platonic love... I'd say it's okay (even though, this 'you'll love him anyway' it's somewhat out of the blue. Nowhere earlier in the story the topic of Gojyo caring (as friend or elsewise) came up, theny ou suddenly drop that thought in, and it hangs there... I don't know if that makes any sense...?) . In any case, you definately qualify for a Saiyuki pin once you sorted out the language issues.

Yeah, I picked out a few errors (mentioned them in the review) but other than that, definitely up to your usual standard. I agree with OptiMoose - wow. ;D I do prefer your humour ones and One Flew Over, though. But this is an entirely different style, and it's very nice to read. ;D

*laughs* I really should know better than to post things un-beta'd at three o'clock in the morning. Yesterday when I went back in to edit (after e-d's VERY helpful and appreciated critique) I found so many things I disliked that I changed quite a bit. Of course, I still forgot to put the "the end" at the end even in the revision. *facepalms* That's why this isn't really a submission. What he does, whether he tells Sanzo about it, whether he even really buys it... Who knows? I can't write Gojyo to save my life, much less figure out how he'd really respond to old norse and celtic gods playing with his mind like a deck of cards. *laughs* Anyway, thanks for the feedback. It gives me some clues as to what I need to work on in future works, and writing things so far out of my comfort zone is a good challenge.

Gaah... people have already started to submit (or whatever you call it, treneka ;D ). I have way too much to do. Since we had until July I was hoping that maybe I could manage to write something, because I really like the idea. Oh well, I don't think I will read any other story from this little 'contest' until I either have finished my own, or I find I can't write it. I don't want to confuse my own little bunny jumping around in my poor head. ;D

treneka: Ah, but Gojyo's a lot like Sanzo, just with a way nicer cover to show the world. Me-Nuriko: I'm looking very much forward for your entry, you know? And there are enough prizes for everyone. I might even throw in an extremly cute Hakkai-magnet for your fridge.
