It's been a long time since I've posted here, and I've been innundated with anime (thanks to a couple fellow enlisted who have a frighteningly large collection). I saw and fell absolutely in love with the series Vandread for stunning but not in-your-face special effects both visual and audio, drama, comedy, amazing music (I love it) impressive fight scenes and a surprising amount of philosophical depth for what can seem such a silly series.
Does anybody else have any new (or old) series that have captured the heart and mind?

Hello and welcome back!!
I'm still mostly a Saiyuki fan but I do watch Bleach, even though I missed the ending of the first arc (I'm reading the manga to catch me up and when I find time I'll watch the episodes) and most of the second. I have started watching the newest storyline regularly. I recently watched Karin (called Chibi Vampire as a manga) and it was cute. Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou (a current show) has been very good and the last episode was just subbed. Claymore (current) has been good (I love the manga so I didn't want to miss the anime). I find that I enjoy a lot of anime but nothing has really grabbed me with WOW!!, I can't live without the next episode. I have Hayate no Gotoku (current), Darker than Black (current), DeathNote (current), D.Gray-man (current), Hikaru no Go(out on DVD), HunterxHunter (old), a live action version of the manga REMOTE (raw, unfortunately) and Busou Renkin (just ended) to watch (and I know I'm forgetting several other series I have bought the DVDs of but haven't found time to watch).
I haven't heard of Vandread but I just looked it up on anime news network's website and it sounds interesting. AND it has a Japanese seiyuu that I enjoy listening to. What are some of the other series that you are being tempted by? As you can see from my list I may not always have time to see what I get but I LOVE the temptation just in case I ever do find the time.

I've found a collection of other people in the military who are anime fans, and thanks largely to one I have been reintroduced to the heroin known to some as "anime". I suppose I should go through the list of ones that I remember, I've been watching a lot on my off-days and there are a lot I've forgotten the name of at the moment: - Ruroni Kenshin - The music is always right on that show. I was fine with just having watched it until I found the outtakes, and now I curse my friend because with that added to everything else in this amazing series (as long as it is) now I have to buy it.
- His and Her Circumstances - funny, and terrifyingly true to life
- Elfen Lied - Bloodier than I usually like, and filled with "messed up" on so many levels, yet somehow it sucked me in. And I love the main theme. Did I mention that the last 5 seconds really ticked me off? (We all know who it is, show her face!)
- .Hack//SIGN - My friend who owns it doesn't like it because it doesn't have much action, but I like how they take the time to think about things
- .Hack//Roots - Something of mine that I'm addicting my friend to. (*grins evilly* revenge is sweet). I actually found this after looking for the release date for the game Volume 2 of .Hack//GU, which I proudly hold as one of the greatest games of all time. I just want Ovan to explain himself eventually, I hate all his partial sentences. We're still going through this, so if anybody here knows anything about it beyond episode twenty please refrain from spoilers until I finish the 26-episode long series, when I will edit this post.
- Nadesico - Contains one of my favorite anime lines ever: "So this is the lover's spat that will determine the fate of the human race?"
- Record of Lodoss War - I never actually liked this enough to finish more than a few episodes, but I saw the first few
- Full Metal Panic - Astoundingly funny, but with an enjoyable story and great ending theme. And I think Chidori-san's explosions are funny. "Where did she get that fan from?" I also like its more comedy-filled cousin Fumoffu and we're searching for the other DVDs for the rest of its even more addictive cousin The Second Raid.
- Love Hina - Though I didn't like the music all that much, it was funny and had the greatest punch and kick of all anime (both of course inflicted on Keitaro by Naru)
To my delighted surprise, most of these had excellent music that I am currently trying to get samples of. Especially .Hack//GU, which I had to order the music for. I am in love with the music for that game, particularly "Everything In These Hands" played during the fight scene between Haseo and Azure Kite, and "Lost Resolution" played in Kuno's fight scene. Pushing my love of the linguistics to second, the music is definitely the thing I enjoy most about an anime, so if I don't like the music I won't like the anime.

I've been in love with Ruroni Kenshin for years, though much of the last arc was disappointing.
I've seen hit and miss of Elfen Lied, my Husband liked it and watched it, I peeked at it occasionally. I saw the first several episodes on a movie screen at Otakon and though it was intriguing, it is much too violent for me and as you say, *messed up* on way too many levels.
I am 2/3 of the way through .HACK//Roots. I like it though I dislike the way characters keep disappearing. My Husband loves playing the games and on our next shopping spree we will be picking up .Hack//G.U. We saw .Hack//Sign quite a while ago. I actually need to go back and watch it again.
My son loves FMP and all it's sequels. I have yet to find time to watch them but have plans to *someday*.
I tend to tune out the music except for the opening and closing themes. For me, whether it's in English or Japanese, it's the voice acting that makes a series. No matter how good even the story is, if the voices are terrible, I can't deal with it.

I would reccomend Samurai 7. It manages to convey the story that the original film was telling whilst giving us a whole new outlook and background. Its very good! ^_^ I would definitely recommend this. S7 really did make me go Wow! The plus of this as a series is that it is one season (26 eps) and that's it. There is no more...of course fangirls want more due to various things but hey that's what ff is for! I've started to watch GunXSword and I'm quite attatched to the characters. A little slow in terms of action I suppose but it has lovely characterisations that will grow on you. I loved RK but I thought the OVA was a little disappointing....and hope to catch Peacemaker Kurogane because as a historical figure Hajime Saitou is very interesting and here we get to see how different anime portrays the man.... And I must admit to watching things purely because some Seiyuu's are in the series...namely Ishida Akira, Miki Shinichirou and a couple of others...sad fangirl that I am!

I've heard of Samurai 7, but never seen it. Maybe I'll check it out sometime. And since I seem to be listing all the anime I've seen, I've remembered a few: - Ranma 1/2 - This show is so incredibly funny, almost every episode my sides hurt from laughter. Faintly repetitive, but they've always been able to make it work. The music ranges from tolerable to good, depending on the season and whether I'm listening to the wacky lyrics or just the tune.
- Orphen - The music grinded on my nerves, but it was funny and had a good amount of drama.
I wonder how many other people pay much attention to the music in anime (or if I'm the only one who does things like collecting Gundam Seed OSTs when I've never even seen the series). Of course, I'm rather ignorant of the seiyuu; as long as they get the job done and don't have a frequent super-annoying laugh I take them as just another piece of the puzzle. I'm sure in a year that list of series will have become much longer.

I liked the first season of Orphen, though I have only seen it in English. Orpehn's English voice actor is David Matranga who voices Genjo Sanzo in Saiyuki. My favorite part of anime really has to be the voices and though I prefer Sanzo's Japanese seiyuu, Seki Toshihiko, David Matranga did a nice job on Orpehn AND Sanzo. The second season of Orphen was drawn differently and the characters acted more *cartoonish* than in season 1. I have only made it through half of season 2. The manga is very different than the series is.
I have Samurai Seven to watch, thanks to zan's recommendation. And with Shinichiro Miki in it, how can I not give it a try?
