Woohoo! I have fun on these sorts of threads, can you tell? Name: Donnie Darko Genre: Indie cult craziness Summary: Donnie is a vaguely unstable young man trying to function in his hypocritical surroundings. One night, a six-foot tall bunny named Frank saves his life, and now he must obey Frank both out of servitude and a desperate desire not to be lonely. Warnings: Mild sexual scenes, foul language, violence Why I love it: It doesn't make sense until the end, and the end is chilling and beautiful. The movie is filled with originality and symbolism not normally seen in American cinema, and Gyllenhaal's performance is rife with pathos. It's disturbing, hilarious, and gets your gears turning for at least a few good hours afterward. A good movie to watch late at night. And, you know what... Name: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead Genre: Shakespearian tangent Summary: Based off of a wonderful book by an author whose name escapes me, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" must deal with the insanity of their friend and the inevitability of death. Warnings: Shakespearian language, death Why I love it: First off, I'm just a big Gary Oldman fan. So crazy! Second, I was pointed in the direction of this film by WildeLamassu after it reminded her of "The Breakroom", so it's already got that tinge of sweetness for me. But honestly, the soft little moments between Guil and Ros are brilliant. I love being able to see what is going on while Hamlet runs stark raving mad in Shakespeare's foreground. The Player is creepy and fantastic, and the tiny touches of physical discovery and philisophical waxing add a depth to the characters not seen in the play. Plus that, at times it's uproariously funny

Name of the movie: Ice Pirates Genre: SciFi / Action Rating: PG-13 (for useless whacking & a useless love scene and Robert Urich's SWORD ;D)
Brief Summary of what the movie is about: It's somewhere in the future. Mankind has conquered space, but there's a slight little problem: Water. Those who are in control of the water, control everything. Enter the Ice Pirates. Like pirates of the old age, they capture water transport space ships and steal the valuable -frozen- goods. Enter a princess. Enter a really nasty bad guy. Enter the story about a long lost world that has more water on it than they can all dream of. Result: chaos ensues.
Warnings: Extreme madness, dirty jokes, space herpes. Educational value: none.
What do you like about the movie?: It's one of those movies from the 80's SciFi rush. But even though it's a B-movie and horribly rips off Star Wars, Buck Rogers, Mad Max and the swashbuckling pirate movies of the 5's, 'Ice Pirates' manages to hold its ground and successes at creating a parody of the genre.

I love Ice Pirates. Wish I could get my hands on a copy of it. ME and my brother use to watch it all the time growing up. Which is amusing in retrospect cause we didn't get half the jokes. ^^;

Yes, you only get some of the jokes once you are a bit more... experienced. Somewhat like Lion King, in that aspect. They more or less regularly show the dubbed version in the educational program's evening entertainment slot (I wonder why. ) - Usually alongside with "Logan's Run" or other more serious stuff from the same time period. Name of the movie: Halleluja Trail Genre: Western / Comedy Rating: PG Brief Summary of what the movie is about: It's the midst of the 19th Century. The miners of Denver face a serious problem: They are running out of Whiskey, and winter is near. They order a load, but the "Abstinence League" and the 'Indians' are after the alcohol, for their own reasons. So the owner of the Whiskey Trek calls in for the help of the Army. The miners send a rescue party of their own... Naturally, chaos ensues... and who gets the whiskey? You'd be surprised! Warnings: Might be offensive for nowaday's political corectness. What do you like about the movie?: Outside of the fact that it has Burt Lancaster? Well, for once, it has a lot of situation comedy, romance, is fairly critic about some political issues and hypocrites, and it makes a good parody about heroes, westerns and assorted issues. Not to forget, it has two of the most memorable fight scenes in Western history: The attack on the Fort (Halleluuuu-ja! *boom*), and the all-out battle scene between Army, Indians, Miners, Abstinence League and Whiskey Trek (It still amazes me how that one was choreographed. ...

Okay I've got to put this one down before OptiMoose gets to it. Title: Ladyhawke Genre: Fantasy, Action/Adventure Rating: PG-13 Warnings: Occult themes, Evil Catholic Bishop, conversations with God Summary:(Taken from DVD box) Ladyhawke is the enchanting tale of a beauty (Michelle Pfeiffer), a knight (Rutger Hauer) -- and a pickpocket known as the Mouse (Matthew Broderick). Once the knight an lady were lovers. Now the curse of an evil Bishop (John Wood) keeps them "always together, eternally apart." By day she is a hawk, by night he is a wolf. To end the evil spell, the knight vows to break into the Bishop's stronghold. With help from The Mouse. (For those of you working on your grammar see just how many grammar mistakes you can find in the above paragraph. See even the pros mess up. )Review:Let the record show that I loved this movie before I got into wolves. Part of what makes this movie so great is that it manages to balance epic fantasy with witty humor. The poignent scenes involving Isaboe<sp?> and Navarre's heart aching misery are enhanced by not disrupted by the amusement of Mouse's bumbling antics and witty dialogues with God. The movie is also filled with wonderful lines and dialogue. The little poem from the beginning will forever be stuck in my head "The mouse? he left our house. To ease the pain, he went down the drain." The dialogue and characters are not the only thing that is memorable about the movie. The costumes are beautifully done and the locations in some cases, breathtaking. Behind all of this you have an excellant soundtrack, even if it shows its eighties roots. This movie makes you laugh and cry, and like all good fantasies they get the bad guy in the end.

This is one I almost never dare to admit that I love, but I really do.
Name: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Genre: Action/comedy
Rating: Don't remember what the American rating is, but the Swedish say 'From 15 years of age'. But personally I think that's to play it safe. (Especially as the follow up was 'From 11 years of age', and I can't see what would cause the difference)
Summary: Four humanoid turtles are pursued by an evil man called 'Shredder'. That's because the turtles' master, a humanoid rat, 'Splinter', once bit off his ear. (Yeah, yeah, I know.)
Warnings: Not for people who takes things too serious. It also includes a lot of fighting scenes, no blood, though.
What I like about it: It's smarm! The four turtles, are constantly arguing, especially two of them (recognize it from somewhere, folks?). But they really love each other (all of them), and there is a really cute scene when one them gets seriously injured and his 'arguing partner' is keeping watch over him.

The original US rating for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was PG.
This movie and the two sequels were favorites in our house for many years with my first two sons. When my third son was about eight he watched it with his older brother and it became his favorite movie for at least a year. I think I can still recite the dialogue in my sleep.
We wore out the VHS tape of movie #3, it was played so often. We still have the first two movies.

Long time no post here!! Must change that. Ocean's 11 Genre: Action, I suppose, and totally humour. Rating: Dunno. Saw it a while ago but remember nothing bad in the PWP way. As far as I recall, no extreme violence either. So PG/PG-13 Summary: Ocean (george clooney) is released from jail and decides to raid the safe of his enemy(andy garcia)(who married his ex-wife(julia roberts))'s highly successful casino, with a team of eleven people including a grease man, (rookie) pickpocket (matt damon) Warnings: Brad Pitt!!!!!! Utter gorgeousness. In a movie without Orlando Bloom, he is a very nice substitute. What I like?: It has Brad Pitt. Need any more be said? Also is full of twists and turns. It is hilarious. You will crack up after the whole SWAT team thingy, I bet. Farenheit 9/11 Genre: Documentary. Humour. Rating: PG-13 for blood and gore. Summary: Surely everyone knows this. Michael Moore is a very anti-GeorgeBush guy, and in this film he investigates the Bush administration, pre-9/11 but most afterwards; how the president acted upon all these things. A lot about Saudi connections, and the whole Iraq thingy. I was watching it this afternoon by haven't actually finished watching it yet. Warnings: Blood and gore from the Iraq bombing scenes. Swearing too, though not a lot. What I like: It's funny in lots of places - lots of irony - but also informs you of what really happened. Although as an Aussie in Malaysia I am not so influenced by the American newspapers etc, some of that certainly reached me and it's great to see someone else's view. I believe Michael Moore did an excellent job with this film.

Name: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I remember seeing that movie several times when I was younger. It was so funny. Farenheit 9/11 What I like: It's funny in lots of places - lots of irony - but also informs you of what really happened. What really happened? It's a movie, it was made by the entertainment industry, and not even so much to entertain as to attack George Bush. I had a friend at college who was named "Michael" (his parents named him after Michael Moore). After that movie came out, he was so ashamed of his association with Moore that he now goes by his middle name. Although as an Aussie in Malaysia I am not so influenced by the American newspapers etc, some of that certainly reached me and it's great to see someone else's view. First of all, you should remember that all media (not just the movie industry, which stretches and bends the truth most of the time anyway) puts their own spin on things. Even if you're watching local news, you should listen to everything they say "with a grain of salt" as they say. I assume that everything they say is a lie and go from there, if what they say is still the conclusion I reach than it is very certain that what was said was the truth. Anyway, this movie is littered with inaccuracies. As I said above, it was not created to inform and hardly even to entertain, it was made to attack Bush. Look at the date when it was made - it was made and released just when the "presidential race" began, when Moore hoped to do the most damage to George Bush. If Moore gave a damn about what was right, or respected the people involved at all, it would have been done and released right away. And correct me if I'm wrong, but at the end of the movie, it didn't say anything like "Dedicated to those who lost their lives", did it? Name of the movie: Saving Private RyanGenre: WWII Action (at least, I think action...) Rating: "R" Brief Summary: When three sons of a family of four sons are killed in action in WWII, the Army sends Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) to find and pull the last Private Ryan from combat and send him back home. Warnings: There is some blood and gore - the movie practically opens with the Allied landings at Omaha Beach in Normandy, and unlike other wishy-washy war movies, Steven Spielberg wanted to give an accurate portrayal to honor the men who fought and died there. I'd say "only for mature viewers", even if you skip the Omaha Beach scene (which you shouldn't) there's a lot of depth in this movie. What do you like about the movie?: As I said before, this is an accurate movie with a lot of depth. Spielberg did an excellent job of making sure that the war was portrayed as it actually is - long stretches of boredom broken by moments of sheer terror. Name of the movie: Schindler's ListRating: "R" Brief Summary: Oscar Schindler starts out as a slippery war profiteer, but slowly sees what is happening around him and works (with his secretary Itzak Stern) to save as many Jews as he can. Warnings: This is a 1940s film involving the Holocaust, that alone should make you be cautious. However, this is a powerful movie and I strongly recommend that everybody (once mature enough to understand it, at least) should see it once. What do you like about the movie?: This movie is powerful, and I guarantee it will make you look at human nature in a different way - and not necessarily for the worst. John William's music is also excellent, I have a copy of the soundtrack. I'd recommend To Kill a Mockingbird, but I haven't finished reading the book yet and I like to compare a movie to the book it's based off of. Yes, I do take my movies seriously, but that doesn't mean I only watch completely serious movies: Name of the movie: Galaxy QuestGenre: Comedy/Parody (especially if you've watched Star Trek: The Original Series) Rating: "parental guidance suggested" (probably for the mis-teleport of the "pig-lizard") Brief Summary: Take all of the silly little things you've ever seen in a Sci-Fi show and twist it around just a little bit. This is as funny as Young Frankenstein. Warnings: Try to sit in a padded chair with arms so you don't roll onto the floor with laughter fits. Even the slightly-gross mixed-up teleportation of the "pig-lizard" is funny. What do you like about the movie?: This is a comedy, it's hilarious in so many ways I couldn't possibly list it all here. People who are (semi-) fans of Star Trek will get a lot more out of it than people who have never seen a cheesy Sci-Fi show, but anywhere in between is good enough.

Well, I won't really suggest this, so...
Teen Titans: Is it really anime, or cartoon? It seems to be in between. Does anyone else watch it? But its so funny!
e-d: Whoa! Chip alert!

I'll assume chip is a bad thing, then, should I?
I know the film was created to attack Bush. But the thingy did say, why did you enjoy it, or something, so I wrote what I enjoyed about it. I can't see what's wrong with that.

Elven Dreamer. Please don't worry about it. Just as there are differing opinions of the movie in the US, there can be differing opinions on the board. You did nothing wrong by listing a movie you felt was entertaining. Ganheim merely responded to your review. Politics and religion can cause the most emotional responses from people.
Teen Titans- I watch it with my son. It is a cartoon but that doesn't make it a bad thing. ;D

Name: Spaceballs Genre: Comedy/SciFi/Adventure Rating: PG Summary: Heroes Lone Starr and Barf must rescue Princess Vespa from the clutches of villian Dark Helmet. Along the way they find zaney adventures and love. Warnings: Language/Sexual Inuendos Why I like it: Mel Brooks is a genius. This movie is a spoof of so many SciFi movies that each time you watch it you can find a new joke to laugh at. It also has an enjoyable central story and great actors to carry it off. Mel Brooks is espescially funny as Yogurt, who teaches Lone Starr the way of *The Schwartz*.
