Auuugh! How does betaing really work?
I've only ever sent my fics to my friend, she comments, sends it back.
Then later on, I found out that authors send it back with their own comments and explanations, and it goes back and forth. So now I'm afraid that I've inadvertantly offended someone by not doing so.
*brain explodes*

=O Oh dear! *mops up your brain*
As for beta-ing... to be honest, I'm not entirely sure how it works... but I find finding a couple of betas to be helpful. For example, I have a beta that checks my (awful) grammar, another that checks to make sure that I keep any characters that aren't my originals IC, and another that checks for anything else that may have been missed. Having more than one beta can be very helpful, as you recieve lots of different opinions and views on how to improve.
Having a friend beta can be even more helpful as they're not afraid to be totally honest with you. (Sometimes, if you find a beta that you're not familiar with, they'll try to be as nice as possible, and when that happens, someimes you may not be able to correctly pinpoint any mistakes.)
...I'm sorry if I didn't totally answer your question... but I hope I was of some help! *bow*
Ja!
