OTAKON. It's 3 months away but preparations are already being discussed in my house for August's convention. Last year I had planned/hoped to dress-up as Sanzo but I ran out of time and to be honest, after seeing some of the costumes, I was glad I hadn't dressed up.
I guess I would like to know if anyone else might be attending?

You guys are so lucky to have such events. ;D The closest we'll ever come to such things will be a book fair, with maybe a little corner dedicated to manga. And then they will lump the comics, cartoons in together as well. So will you really go as Sanzo. Are you considering going as anybody else? Send us the pics if you do. Ahahaha! I think the one time I did dress up it was for opening night for "The Phantom Menace" I went as Amidala in one of her funky outfits. The dress was ok, with sewing machine. (this was pre-children mind!) But the head gear was a killer to make. I think once I got going it took about a week to do. It was finding the materials that was hard. Anyway do give us the gossip on how it goes, when you go ok? zan

I don't think I will go as Sanzo. After last year I decided that I wouldn't like being in the spotlight as so many people who get dressed up are. I want to go to the convention to enjoy the panels and watch the anime shows (and the AMVs were exceptional too). Last year we got to see Bleach, Loveless, and the Gravitation OVA (which I had never seen and loved more than the series) on a huge movie screen. All of them were fansubs. I also got to go to a writers panel that I want to go to this year too. The dealers room is also a must. I got a Weiss Kreuz anime cell (There were no Saiyuki ones. Since RELOAD is slightly popular now, maybe they will have some this year.) and I would love to get another WK one this year.

I was looking at the line-up they are having at the convention. The mangaka of Yellow, Makota Tateno, will be there to coincide with the English release of the final volume. Paul might not want to see her, but I sure do.
Helsing's Mangaka will be there too. I haven't read Helsing, but I think I will before the convention.
Also, Hidenobu Kiuch will be there. He does the voice of Hematite Ramsbeckite in Cluster Edge (and Yuushi Oshitair in PoT, but I haven't watched enough PoT to know this character).
MUCC and Nana Kitade are the musical guests. I will need to look for some of their music since I don't recognize their names.
The AMV contest, the music videos (with translations. We saw some very unusual videos last year), news of new series to be released and fan subs of some favorites are just a few of the things I can't wait for.

The line up sounds impressive. I have only managed to catch parts of "hellsing". I was impressed by what I saw. I think you will like Nana Kitade, she has an amazing voice. Good, strong and breathy. Although I am having trouble finding her music in the shops. We get popular J-rock here but still some are hard to find, and when you do find any you have to think twice because the price is just off planet. *sigh* Very cool. I'm excited for you anyway. Meanwhile, I'm counting the days till the children go back to school. Yes though it was lovely to spend the tonne of time with Shahrazad, I'm more than ready to hand her back to her teachers for a few hours each day! zan

Our summer vacation just started today. Almost 2 1/2 months of no school. The kids don't go back until the beginning of Sept. (the first Tuesday of the month).
I know what you mean about the J-pop music CDs being expensive. My husband Paul bought some Nami Tamaki cds from Kinokuniya and they were over 35 dollars each. I hadn't even thought of looking there, but it is a start. They also have the Saiyuki CD that is piano music. Part of me is tempted to buy it, the rest knows it is just too expensive. If I wait until the convention I know there will be plenty of CDs of their music and at a decent price, but I like knowing something about the artists I am listening to/watching.

I found a song by each of the artist on TokyoT. At least it's a start for getting to know what they sound like. Now I just need a seed to finish the Nana Kitade download.

Yeah, sometimes being a grown-up just sucks big time. To be honest, these 4 days are going to be our vacation this year and I think we will end up going out to Ohio during one of the school breaks in the winter. (The week after Christmas will probably work the best.)
I would love the links to his character discs. Last year we didn't go to see any of the seiyuu or manga-ka, but this year I really want to.
I wish you were able to still go, but I know the hotel costs are really high and if we hadn't already planned on going, the cost might have kept us home too.

Exactly one week away and I feel all bouncy. I can't wait to hit the dealers room and to see what anime they will be featuring this year and I'm dying to see what anime will be the favorite for the cos-players too. Inu Yasha and Bleach won last year, though there were a few Saiyuki (and someone even dressed up like Nii) and Trinity Blood.

Three more days of work and then WE GO. ;D The dealers room is VERY dangerous. The anime cells are a weakness of mine, as are the figurines. Last year I turned down the chance to buy an authentic (It even had the Pierrot sticker) Hakkai figurine (12 inches tall) because the price was just too scary (100 dollars!!!) This year I think I will give in to the Kon stuffed animal if it is there and the Weiss Kreuz tv DVDs because it was cheaper there than in the stores. They have a lot of the older anime series that are not usually carried in stores any more. There were also lots of t-shirts of dragons and fairies and silly sayings. (Another weakness. ;D) Having a Kinokuniya and a Japanese import store near me means I have a lot of great anime figurines and manga/artbooks already, so that should cut down on some of my purchases, though last year there were manga for sale by the different publishers that weren't supposed to be on sale for months. Then there are also the J-pop music stands and the... ;D*bouncebouncebounce* ;D

dragons and fairies and silly sayings. (Another weakness. ;D) Having a Kinokuniya and a Japanese import store near me means I have a lot of great anime figurines and manga/artbooks already ;D My weakness would be um Hakkai, unicorns, dragons, ... Hakkai... Its funny our Kino's stock the manga, but the figurines you can get are for films like the Matrix, LotR, the Marvel Superheroes..the only Japanese stuff they carry are those by Clamp, but sadly not the new ones. So, no Tsubasa chronicles. I may order some stuff at some point for Sharazad's birthday. in Dec. (or Christmas) She has been the most wonderful little girl enjoying and making the most of her first year at 'big' school. Whilst her bumbling in the dark mother is only just survivng the experience! I really want to get something special for her. She really has earnt it. ... and if you cannot spoil your little girls (and boys) who can you spoil, eh? ;D ;D ;D

What kind of things does Sharazad like?
Our Kinokuniya has figurines from lots of the major current anime series, several video games, and absolutely nothing from US films. Of course, as I said, they are not marked which figure is in the box and you take your chances of getting duplicates. (We have 3 Vincents from Final Fantasy, 2 with a cape and one without.) I got my beautiful Gojyo keychain from there (they didn't have Hakkai, or anyone else). They have Saiyuki stickers and have had a few poster too.
And I forgot my dragon weakness too. We have approx. 25+ (both quite large ones and small) and that number is always increasing since my husband loves them too and we get the McFarland collection every year. When we finish painting the diningroom, we are going to make 2 nice shelves to hold many of the dragons.

Ho my we have digressed a little haven't we! Ah well. At the moment she really loves the characters from Tsubasa Chronicles. I am looking to see if someone anywhere will retail the two Mokona's as plushies. That would just be too cute! Both she and I love Fai and Kurogane. (She says Kuro-pon reminds her of Daddy!) He's quite funny when he's angry (Daddy I mean). It is just too hard for him when the two women in the family won't take him seriously when he's angry! ;D Yes the kitchen display cabinet holds my collection of Unicorns. in glass, pewter and porcelain, a Ty beany baby unicorn and a dragon, and a few other dragons, a couple of mermaids and a troll. I have to refrain from buying anymore cos' I don't have anymore space! plus it will be better for my wallet too. Really! She likes Cardcaptor still, they regularly re-air the series because it's very popular here. She never tires of watching it. She prefers the Sakura and Syaoran of the original series. She says that the Sakura in Cardcaptor is a much stronger person than the one in Tsubasa. Her words not mine! But must go and pack children off to bed!
