I have been having a on going battle with my husband on this one. He says that Chibiness of characters is demeaning. As I just adore it, I really get happy when Prince of Tennis does their yearly chibi episode. I know that Ms. Con isn't a fan, but what about the rest of you? Do you like the cuteness or is it nauseating to you? Anyway I thought it would be a good thread. Admin edit: edited typo in the topic

Heh. I saw the topic and knew I was getting mentioned in there somewhere... No, I don't especially like chibis. I never have, and I really can't see them growing on me. Part of it is the 'drawing style' that tends to be used, I'm not a big fan of that type of caricature. I guess the rest of it is that (for me at least) it takes very little to reach 'chibi-oversaturation'. A little might be acceptable but more than that and it grates on me. A lot.

Thanks Admin for fixing the spelling, sigh to be a good speller....
But Ms. Con it was a nice mention. ;D I am just curious as to others opinions on the subject.
I want to find out if I am the only one that thinks it is cute.

I think that I have to agree with MsCongeniality. I don’t like the ‘Chibiness” drawing style. Maybe once in a while, other than that I can’t stand it. But, oh well, that’s only my opinion.

Sorry Rhoda, but I have to agree with the others. I am not a fan of Chibis. I have seen some that are cute but for the most part, I don't like them.

I think there's such thing as "too much chibi," but I think they're awfully cute at the same time. I have a big affinity for children or child-like people, so I guess that might be why.

Ginji in GetBackers gets chibisized a lot, and I have never really liked it. Sure, he's awfully cute when he's a chibi, but I much prefer his normal appearance. When I first encountered chibis, I was told that they are a way of expressing different feelings and emotions the character feel at the moment, and when looking at them that way I can deal with them. Heh, I have to admit I own two small (one very small) pillows in the form a chibi-Ginji's head.

well I am the odd duck then. Oh well, Quack! Not the first or the last time that will be the case. Of course I do a chibi dance so I should have known.
It is funny You mention getbackers as that is the show that brought this to my husbands attention. he was sitting through My new dvd with me and wanted to know if the chibi of Ban and Genji was normal. I said not really although some shows do more than others. Take Saiyuki you never get chibi unless it is something after the show, or in the manga art.

I'm late again, I see. I don't mind the occasional chibi in the right situation. I like the chibi-pics of Sanzo & gang, for example, because Minerkura got across their charcterization perfectly with them. Sometimes, chibi-Ginji makes me laugh. But there's just so much cuteness I can stand in an episode - and especially Get Backers crosses that line too often. I was close to stop watching an episode that had way too much chibis in them (the one on the ship, where Ginji makes friends with the Miroku protector guy). Then again, as far as I know, the 'chibi' versions are very popular in Japan. So I guess I'll have to live with it.

OptiMoose: That epsiode in GB you mentioned is one I like very much, but it is as you said , too much chibi in it. And this mission, taking back the arms of Venus, is far better in the manga. Sigh. I wish they could do a decent translation of the manga.

Chibi... is that the huge heads thing? With the tiny bodies and only basic detail? If so, I thinks it's cute, but not too much of it. .

*sigh* Chibis... I guess you either love 'em or hate 'em, some may be lucky enough to have mixed feelings on them. While I don't mind them too much in individual pictures as such, I find that they have a tendancy to annoy me in anime. Take PoT. I love PoT. The chibi episodes ARE funny, I gotta admit BUT I find when watching them that I want it to be over because the chibis just wear at me... Take DragonHalf, the first anime I saw on the first night I went to my local anime club which had chibis in it. I was confused by the ever changing animation style, it would be good one minute and pretty much (sorry to say this) suck the next. I admit I am picky when it comes to animation, I like it to look nice a nd clean and flow nicely. The chopping and changing every couple of minutes annoyed the heck out of me. That has probably, to some extent, coloured my perceptions on chibis. Getbackers? Luckily I haven't seen that much, though I do remember a bit of the Ginji chibiness. Hate the look. Pure and simple. Gotta watch more of that though, we have the anime in the house, hust otta find the time but I wont be looking forward to the chibi episode. However, there is ONE chibi I adore, 'chibi' Ed from FMA. *grins* Gotta love the çhibbiness that is Ed.

I have to agree. The chibis in DragonHalf nearly destroyed what otherwise seemed like a good anime.
So far, I haven't liked the chibis in Get Backers. They are so simple and distorted I feel they throw off the story.
I do like individual pictures of chibis, It's the moving ones that I don't care for.

It's pity if chibis make you not watch an otherwise good anime. I said before that I try to think of them as only a way to express certain feelings and emotions. That way it's easier, at least for me, to see the story behind the chibis.
