Since there was such interest on this in the What are you? thread I thought this deserved its own thread.
So my question is: Who are people's favorite characters from the series?

Of all the original characters, my favorite os MasterHarper Robinton and his fire lizard Zair. It was his strength that held Pern together when thread started to fall again. It was his vision in embracing AVIS that guided Pern toward their thread free future.
Of the next generation of characters, I think I like :
Readis, son of Paradise River LordHolder Jayge and his Lady Alemi, founder of the Dolphincrafthall in Kahrain Hold. He is a Dolphineer. He speaks with the Dolphins of Pern.
F'lessan, son of weyrleaders F'lar and Lessa, rider of Bronze Golanth and weyrleader of Hanshu Weyrhold in the Southern Continent. He is such a personality combination of his parents.
Tia, rider of Green Zaranth, the only dragon so far that can move items and people through telekinesis. Tia is F'lessan's friend and lover.

Well I have to say I never wanted to be a dragonrider. Being a girl dragon rider stank! I mean really if you read the books you see that their lives are given up and over to the weyr. Which wasn't a bad thing but isn't something I would want to do. Look at Moreta, I mean talk about a tragic life.
I personally always wanted a fire lizard like Menolly. I would have loved to be a harper! Of course that woudn't have been possible because I can't carry a tune in a radio.
But wouldn't psychic dragon be fun. Feeding would be a pain but watch them and getting to fly would be worth the trouble I bet.

The only thing that always bothered me about the series was the way women in general were treated. As an Agrarian culture the women weren't thought of too highly, anyway, so the Weyr actually offered them freedom from the Hold's restrictions. The attitude toward women was something Robinton was trying to change (another reason he was my favorite). And, don't forget, once women were allowed to impress dragons, there were a lot of female Green riders. Tia, one of my favorite characters, will be responsible for great changes on Pern.
Ah, but not all Harpers sang. Poor Piemur, when his voice changed. They could still write music or do other things for the Harper Hall.
But to own a Fire LIzard? Yes, that I would love.

I did find the way women were treated a bit shocking, especially how... umm.. names fail me... When Lessa wasn't a dragon rider yet, and that twit was lord of her hold. The way he treated his wife really irritated me.
Can you tell I'm half asleep and can't think?

It used to irritate me a lot too, espescially in the early books. In a way, that was Anne McCaffrey's running theme, women overcoming the odds and succeeding. Lessa,Menolly, Moreta and so many more.
I'm terrible with the names too. Fax was the Lord Holder that Lessa tricked F'lar into killing for her revenge.

I just finished reading all of the first ones (3) with F'lar and Lessa plus the one with Menolly plus "All the Weyrs of Pern"
Can you tell I'm not really reading them in order? Oops. Whatever!
I really find Mirrim annoying. Ruth is cool, but sometimes he's just too great and wonderful (Jaxom is like that too sometimes, so modest and etc). It was strange with Aivas but I thought it was well done.
As a character, I rather enjoyed Robinton. F'nor is cool too. And Brekke.
edit: Isn't Anne McCaffrey Irish? *g* If she is, go Ireland! I'm Irish!

F'nor, Canth and Piemer have to be my favorite characters.
Though I really like DragonDawn's cast too.

Mirrim was annoying. But she did get a little better as the books progressed.
Brekke was so tragic, so brave, so in love. I'd actually forgotten her, with so many of the others. I really do need to read the early books again. It's been at least 5 years since I read them.
One of the things about the Dragonriders of Pern books, that I love, is that the books covered much of the same time period, just from so many different points of view. Then you throw in the other time periods and you have such a complete history of Pern.
