Ok does anyone else shake their head and wonder where these arabitrary numbers came from? Wouldn't a 1-4 be better, than trying to figure out what an 8, 9, 5 or a 3 is? Does anyone know where these numbers came from and could some one please tell me who is who??
These and many other questions float around in my tiny little brain.

well... if I was to hazard a guess... since this is the first I've heard of numbers in Saiyuki. In Japanese: three = san five = go eight = hachi nine = kyuu or ku So I would assume they are based on some sort of pun. I know that Goku does a pun on Hakkai's name in the manga. as for the rest... dunno

Well, I know that for Sanzo and Hakkai's names, the number that they are represented by also happens to be a part of their name. In Sanzo's name, the first kanji is "San", or "three". Hakkai's first kanji in his name is "Hachi", but combined with the other kanji makes "Hakkai."
Gojyo is five because "Go" is five, and Goku is nine because of "ku" (which is a variation of kyu). It actually makes sense once you realize that those particular numbers have a meaning behind them.
Not to mention, who really "determines" this kind of thing in the fandom? I always thought it was somehow silently agreed upon and then just made to be commonpractice. Kind of like how in some fandoms there are special names for pairings, others just use initials, and then a few like Saiyuki (and Gundam Wing also comes to mind) that uses numbers.

That's good to know. I had no idea why people put those numbers down to show the parings. I just thought that it was something that someone came up with, and everyone fallowed.

I know that Goku does a pun on Hakkai's name in the manga. It was in the manga? *blinks* I remember it in the anime, where he was yelling Hakkai's new name at Gojyo to prove he could remember it, and he said it eight times. Hakkai said to Sanzo, "And here's a question for you! How many times did Goku say my name?" Sanzo did a bit of a facefault. "... Hakkai." Hakkai, "Bingo!" Hakkai also means "eight times." ^^; Whether this is common practice or old Japanese, I'm not sure. (Thank you, ADV notes! *pets her DVDs*)

Forget not that "kai" is also a Japanese suffix for counting the floors of a multi-storied building. Unfortunately, I think Gojyo has yet to reach the eighth one. /pervert

*smiles* thanks for clearing that up for me! I figured which pairing meant which by my own ingeniousness (took me AGES when realised 58 was HakkaiGojyo (my fav pairing) and then, I ditched my pride and asked a friend. >< And of course, she being the genius she is, she told me. *happy smile*
But what does somethig like 383 mean? I've seen that around and never got it...

<this part of post cut because it is no longer relevent>
As for the numbers, that deals with who is topping who, which has nothing to do with who is dominant or submissive. The number in front is topping the second number. In the case of 383, it goes either way.

So something like 585 would make Gojyo topping Hakkai? Sorry if I'm very slow...but have been typing about the wonderful WWI for the last hour and my brain can't handle this anymore... can't handle internet? sob. And seme/uke? Dom/sub in that respective order?

I took away my previously post in this thread, and that may make Salmastryon's post a little strange, because she had answered on what I wrote.
I'm well aware of what a really dom/sub relationship mean, and it was stupid of me to use that expression in my last post. Thanks, Salma. I blame it on exhaustion.
58 means Gojyo is topping (not domineering) Hakkai, 585 means that sometimes Gojyo is on top and sometimes Hakkai is on top. But some authors doesn't really care how they write the numbers.
Seme is the one topping, and uke is the one in the bottom.
Dom/sub is something we won't talk about here.

I figured you knew what it meant ;D It is just the termonology is easily confused and I was trying to head things off at the pass. And, I agree dom/sub relationship is not a PG-13 topic ^^;

Heh, you know, I always knew number order meant to denote who was on top, but I'm *SO* lazy about that and sometimes I'd rather leave it vague. That's when xyx or yxy really work.

OH!! (there should be a surprised smiley, not just shocked!) I get it now. *grins, feeling intelligent at last* Thanks. *bows to the brilliant queens of fanfic with great minds and perception* Lol. At last I finally understand the xyx thingy. So uncomplicated, yet so confusing. *sigh*

Elven Dreamer: *pat pat* isokay, I used to be majorly confused as well. I figured it out just because I read a -lot- of fanfic when I first was introduced to Saiyuki, and thought, "Hm, when I see a 5, Gojyo is in the fic. That must mean he's 5! Ah-ha!" et cetera. I didn't know *why* for the longest time I just have to put this, because it makes me giggle like a maniac - my friend's numerical address is (and I don't kid you) 15839 ... I saw the numbers on her house one day and had a bit of a moment. ;D
