That's what I think, but don't really do it. I think that if you have a long span in updates, then the chapters could be a little longer too.

More off topic! But my chapters tend to be 1000-2000 words long. Back to questions, there's a really cute site here- web.utk.edu/~bborchar/unanswerable_questions.htmlA whole bunch of unanswerable questions! Mostly Inuyasha, and they really confuse me!!!

MINEMIINEMINEYOUEVIL*#%^!!! Sorry don't mind me, people - B_D stole my link. I have a passion for unanswerable questions. My chapters tend to be approximately 1000 words long. If I write any more, I feel like it's too long and people will die of boredom, as generally I read during lunchbreak and I quit any ultra-long stuff since I don't have time. But I find any length under about 3500 is what I generally read, though longer ones are good too, if there are only a few chapters. (under 4, in my view) Just my lil opinions

I'd rather apologize for short chapters... My best guess is beccause reading a chapter costs time, and the more you write, the less time there is for other stories, and "My story isn't so good that you should waste much time on it". Which, personally, I think is a load of bull. Of course, there are things like attention span and "time to read things" to take into account, but then I also noticed that people who write longer chapters themselves usually also prefer to read longer chapters. My chapters started out with around 1200-1400 words for my DBZ fics, but that was when I updated every day. Now I have less time for writing, but I feel that I don't need to rush the story ahead, either, since I'm very comfortable in Saiyuki fandom right now. I also feel that after all the time a reader waits for me to update, they deserve more than just a few words. Nowadays, my chapters tend to be between 2000-4000 words long, but lately it's usually between 3000-4000. I'm still not comfortable because I think it's too short. elven_dreamer: Be confident about what you write. Write a good story, people will come back for more. But if even you feel that you will get bored, then maybe your stories need a little bit more work? Just a thought, you know.

Short? SHORT? *voice takes on hysterical/shrill tone* Mine take weeks to write (but its laziness), and are only 1000-2000 words long. What exactly is your definition of 'long'? Most chapters I read are short, simply because my computer time is limited. But, I do so love to drone on and on if I can

OptiMoose: Heh...heh....true, true. Had quite given up on one of my stories but after receiving a compliment yesterday (from an extensive reader) have been revived and decided to carry on. Blood_Debt: Lol. But hey! Give it to me and I'll type it, beta it, whatever! I have a month of nothingness to kill! I may as well do something productive.

My chapters are generally 1000-2000 words, and I try make them closer to 2000. Sometimes though I have chapters of only 800 words (for prologues or ending scenes that are just a power-filled whack) and I always feel guilty... I like the 4 digit thing. I didn't understand why people excused themselves for longer chapters--I have a long attention span, especially if I enjoy the story, so I think the longer the chapter the better!! As for the smiley moving question (from a while ago, I just read through the entire post thing) what I do is just write the code--I never click on the smileys to insert them, lol!! And now for my silly question: Seeing as I haven't been on the inet for quite some time, I am confused--when did the ratings change? What in the world is K and T?? What happened to good, old-fashioned G, Pg, etc?

Kitsune-oni: The For Your Entertainemt- Ratings thread on the Fanfics Helpdesk 3: General section (page 2) could answer your question much better than I could. Welcome back.

hello all, and no i still haven't had my coffee; I love reading longe chapters...and Me-Nuriko, 'Choices', did not feel long at all. it was just exactly right. Unfortunately i am not so prolific as some of you, but i think perhaps that may be a blessing in disguise(for readers perhaps haha!) i am addicted to reading words but when i try it myself for a fic...it can be difficult. i think i've written short ones(about 800 words or so) and the longest i ever got to is around 3000. but i also think the length of a story is irrelevant if the fic is good. ive read drabbles (which i'm fond of but have never written any myself-too difficult for me) which were mindblowing. because to convey a thought, idea, feeling or scene in 100 words is not an easy task...sort of like haiku's. (i know not the best of analogies) but then again like 'Choices' so many wonderful words turned into a flowing moving picture. long, but brilliant...so not long at all in the end! And cesmith, your 1900 and odd words for "the pass" is just right just nice. lovely words and imagery to read. much love- zan

zan, thank you so much for your kind words about The Pass... and it's so exciting that I can now add something to this topic. ;D As a reader, if I am sitting at my computer, I prefer to read shorter chapters and one-shots. If it is a long one-shot or (long) chapter of a multi-chapter story, I tend to print these out to read at my lunch break at work, or in my free time at home. As for the length of my one-shots, I don't seem to plan how many words there are, they just write themselves. I don't know if this is because I'm just starting and very inexperienced or just the way I will be as a writer. I do know I prefer doing the one-shots. Again, I don't know if this is because I haven't learned how to organize a longer story or just my plot bunnies need to grow up more. I do know that The Pass might get another chapter simply because Gojyo wouldn't leave me alone about the ending. It's fully written and just waiting.

This time I have I do HAVE a question... alright... I know that in the Saiyuki verse there are 5 sutras right( the Tenchi Kaigen Sutras). Sanzo has one - the Maten Sutra Koumyo's (which was stolen the night he got killed) - the Seiten Sutra Nii (Kenyu, or Ukoku, ) has one - the Muten Sutra, I think. (the one that was Godai Sanzo's) The Kou- tachi managed to find the one in the desert, so there's one more and no one knows the whereabouts of that one ... right? So the question is can anyone enlighten me on the names of the rest of the sutras. or is it just me that can't seem to pin them down anywhere! Oh and if this has been discussed elsewhere before I came along could someone please re-direct me to relevant thread. I searched but only managed to do so superficially. ;D Help! Thank you - love zan ps - cesmith : OOH! Another chapter to The Pass. Yes Please. Pretty please! zan

In the June-installment of Saiyuki Reload, there's a bit explained about the Sutras: Although the details are something handed down from Sanzo to Sanzo, Genjyo Sanzo goes ahead and explains that the Tenchikaigen kyoumon is made up of not only the Maten and Seiten kyoumons, but also three others: the Uten, Muten and Kouten kyoumons. The people chosen to protect the five are the Sanzos. Just as his Maten kyoumon has the power to purify evil, each kyoumon is endowed with unique abilities: the Maten governs evil spirits and the yin principle; the Seiten governs holiness and the yang principle; the Kouten governs the unknown and the infinite; the Uten governs life and its surroundings; and the Muten governs death and nothingness.
By itself, each kyoumon has great power--but in combination with any of the others, that power intensifies exponentially. The five together had been used in the creation of the world; if they were ever to be put together again, what could happen is just unimaginable. So the Sanzos have been scattered to various areas, keeping the kyoumons apart from each other.Graciously borrowed without permission from: www.madkukkii.com/saiyuuki/snnarch.htmlI hope, this helps a bit.

thanks for this. i just needed to know because another question that's been tickling my brain is that with Nii having the Muten sutra that he inherited from Godai Sanzo, as well as having Koumyo's Seiten sutra, plus the one from the desert, and with Genjyo Sanzo making his merry way to Houtou castle with the fourth sutra...aren't they all like headed for a big bang!!? kind of thing? can't wait for more of the story to unfold!
