Jackie idaho, this was 28 years ago so what I was paid would seem very little compared to todays wages. At the time, however, it was enough to pay my tuition in college, take a dream vacation to Los Angeles with my best friend (the one I worked with), enable me to afford to indulge in the Star Trek conventions I loved to attend and save for my Wedding. I worked with fun people and looked forward to going to work. No stress or pressure, just a set level of performance. If anyone ever had a bad night we all pitched in, no one ever missed quota. ;D My job now, I love, even on the bad days when I've been hit by one of the kids, but working with young children is very undervalued by society and all of my working children earn more than I do. I do this job not for the pay but because I love kids and being with them and watching them explore and learn about the world around them.

I've been wondering what I should say on this thread. As currently unemployed, and only working as a substitute caretaker of mentally retarded I don't feel like I do anything much at all. It hardly pays me enough to get by, but I have to do something, don't I?
During the years I have worked with a lot of different stuff. I've worked in tobacco shops, being a cashier in grocery shops, taking care of other people's children in their homes, I'm an educated postal clerk and worked a few year as that, too. I've been working quite a lot with mentally retarded, both children and adults. For a while I also worked as a personal assisten to a woman with CP.
I have a Degree of Master of Science in Computer and System Sciences. But it's more or less impossible to get a job in IT in Sweden at the moment, and the more time that passes, the more my knowledge will be considered old.
When at the university I worked as a tutor in Pascal-programming.
Now I'm thinking of going back to the university again, and maybe study something only for my own pleasure, like archeology, or something else in that field.

If you study archeology, study it only for your own pleasure. Do not expect to be able to make a living as an archeologist. Trust me on this one. Also, be aware that archeological fieldwork is often both mind-numbingly boring and physically greuling even if you are in good physical condition. It can (and will) leave you with physical problems that can last a lifetime especially things such as repetitive stress injuries.

It can (and will) leave you with physical problems that can last a lifetime especially things such as repetitive stress injuries. Sounds like something I really want to do for my own pleasure. Seriously though, if I stay as a substitute caretaker for mentally retarded I most definitively will get injuries. My mother had to stop working about five years before her retirement age, because of those injuries. And believe me, changing diapers on grown up men and women aren't very exciting either, you could even call it mind-numbingly boring. So far I haven't found a single job that makes me feel like it's something I really want to do. But by changing jobs, I can at least get some variety. Another course at the university I'd like to take, is one in Swedish from the viking and medieval ages. Or one course isn't correct, you can read it for at least two years, full time. I'm also thinking of joining a course at the university that is Internetbased, so I can do most of it from my home. That's a course in Latin. *sigh* I'm interested in far too much stuff.

Soy candles? Sounds interesting. Are they candles that are like made of soya bean extract or something?

Sounds like something I really want to do for my own pleasure. Sorry...I'm really not meaning to discourage you but that's not something most people take into consideration. They usually just think 'ooh! Cool stuff!' and don't really consider what goes in to finding it. Also, the ratio of 'cool stuff' to 'empty dirt' is pretty low, really. So...yeah. I'm not an archeologist anymore if you hadn't guessed. ;-)

But what are you doing instead? Caretaker for mentally retarded? Heh...no. I went to college for archeology and did that professionally from about 1994-1997. I gave it up when I got tired of living at the poverty level, not being sure of where my next paycheck was coming from, and terrible working conditions. Since 2000 or so I've been a desktop publisher in one form or another. It doesn't inspire my soul in quite the same way, but I can afford an apartment and food.

Soy candles? Sounds interesting. Are they candles that are like made of soya bean extract or something? oh my gosh! Sorry it's taken me so long to check back on this thread! here is some info~ Okay the name of the business is Mia Bella and I'm one of its Distributors. I'm not sure of the process in making the candles. But I do know that the candles are made out of soy plus beeswax and plants. The reason its not pure soy is because 100% soy does not hold a scent very well. The Mia Bella wicks are lead free, and the candles are clean burning and triple scented, so it still smells strong to the bottom. Here is a link to the Mia Bella Website for more infomation. www.ep.scent-team.com I love these candles, one of the scents is dark chocolate fudge... ohhh. Delish!

wow! everybody has such interesting backgrounds....i guess maybe i could add my measly S$2 worth. I grew up in a stifling sunny island out in the far east, but was given the chance to study overseas... i ended up spending my formative years in England. Studied Chemistry (i loved it all but Organic Chem. was damned difficult for me! hehe!)at Uni, and came home to work as an Industrial Analytical Chemist. It was the hot men in glasses thing and lab coats. Tenpou! Oh yeah someone followed me home me all that way...so we got married and then decided i wanted to stay at home with the children (the maternity leave, pay thing is very poor and mothers are not generally favourably looked on in the workplace here...i don't care what the govt. says! although things are changing at a snails pace) so now i have a crazy funny husband, and two children who will most likely end up either crazy like mama or like daddy....hopefully in a good way! and no i am not crazy its only my perception and thinking is just on a different plane. and one day i will go back to the laboratory and surround myself with some more hot men in glasses wearing labcoats, but for now Tenpou will do... have already reserved my copy of Ward No.9 at Kinokuniya! I can't read it but i can drool! haha!

While I ponder how I managed to miss this thread before, I shall reply.
I just graduated from high school last month; about two weeks ago. Before that I had held occasional babysitting jobs, but after graduation, I landed my first official job.
I, ladies and gentlemen, work at McDonald's. Even better--I work at a lazy McD's, if you will, since we're inside another store and don't have to worry about cleaning parking lots and bathrooms.
In all actuality, I just landed the job last week, and my first hands-on job starts tomorrow. *crosses her fingers* Once I do well there, I plan on reapplying to a bookstore (oh, to work in a place I love, even parttime... *sparkle*).
Until then, I'm starting classes in a community college this fall. Typical teenage stuff. ^_~

After 3 way too short months of very much enjoyed unemployment from my job at a Day Care Center, I have started working in a Barnes and Noble cafe. I wanted to work as a bookseller or stocking shelves, but I got this job instead. Three different types of jobs rolled into one; cashier, food prep and cleaning crew. The perfect job for someone who has absolutely no job experience, except working with children. The benefits of being able to borrow ANY hardcover book I want to read is a bookworm's dream and the discounts on my mangas and paperbacks more than make up for a meager salary.

I know no one has been reading the threads but I still want to play...
In Sept. I went back to working in a Nursery School that I used to work in 4 years ago and I absolutely LOVED!! The people are great, the parents involved and they have the same philosophy about children that I do. I also continued to work at Barnes and Noble in the afternoons. 8:30 -12:30 Nursery, 1-5 at cafe. In the middle of Dec. it got to be too much so I quit B&N and just work in the school. I love it still.
